Somtimes, it’s hard to relax. Maybe because of stress, maybe because of pain.
Oxytocin is the hormone and the neurotransmitter which recovers the body.
By tactile massage oxytocin is released and helps you to relax.
Unlike the sympathetic nervous system, steered by adrenaline which makes the body prepared
for a challenge, the parasympathetic nervous system, steered by oxytocin makes the body relaxed and helps us to recovery.
If we have been stressed for a long time, had an increase of adrenalin, in other words, it can be hard to get the body to relax.
It can then be a good idea to help the body to calm down, try to get a condition for oxytocin to be released.
This can be done in a number of ways, for example: To tuck oneself into a warm blanket or taking a nice warm bath.
But the most effective way is bodily contact. In our skin, there are sensory receptors with many different functions.
By touching the skin, signals are sent to the brain. Signals about pressure, pain, touch, cold, warmth or vibrations for example.
A hug, or holding someones hand, can for that reason be very comforting when you’re sad.
In the process of tactile massage, the touch- and pressure receptors are activated. The impulses reaches the brain,
via the nerve system and the spine. The more sensitive the skin area , the larger the area in the brain, which recieves the information.
